Protect your Surrey home from intruders

Some burglars are so proficient, they earn their living from breaking into people’s homes. They also become very good at spotting when people are out for the day, or on holiday. Despite your best efforts, you could be leaving your home wide open for burglary, even though you think you’re doing the right things. The risk is higher if you live in a high-crime area.

We often talk about seeing your home through the eyes of a burglar, but what does that really mean?

Dogs Are Overrated

Often, when we talk about burglar deterrents, the first people recommend is a dog. But dogs are overrated; some of the biggest dogs can also be the most friendly, and burglars learn to ignore the signs people put up to warn people they’re there. In some cases, dogs can be stolen along with your possessions, which can make a burglary even more tragic.

Rather than leaving your pooch in charge of home security, invest in a good alarm system that will audibly alert your neighbours. A siren is more effective than a barking dog, and is guaranteed to make plenty of noise if there’s a burglary.

Don’t Overshare

Social networking sites are always prompting us to check in with our location. This is a burglar’s dream come true. If they can see that you landed in Spain at 9am, they’ll assume your house is empty for the next few days, and that could make it an attractive choice for an opportunistic burglary.

Security lighting is always helpful, as are timers and smart lighting that can mimic the activity in your home. In addition, avoid checking in, even if your profile is private, and avoid uploading your holiday snaps until you get home. Not only is it smarter from a security point of view, but it’ll save on data roaming charges too.

Don’t Go Overboard

As we mentioned above, leaving lights in is a good way to make a home look occupied. But be realistic, and don’t overdo it. Take note of your normal usage patterns, and use timers to recreate them. Leaving the hall light on isn’t sufficient, but you don’t want to leave the house lit up like a Christmas tree either.

If you’re concerned about your house looking empty, invest in an alarm with a remote monitoring feature that will alert a keyholder and the police. That way, you’re assured of a fast response, even if you’re nowhere near home.

Additionally, make sure that your CCTV cameras are functional, and visible, but keep all other expensive electronics out of sight. That way, even if someone gets in, they will notice the cameras but not your expensive smartwatch and jewellery.
