Home security in the summer – make sure your alarm is well maintained

Summer is officially upon us, and we’re entering the warmest time of the year. It’s the time to air out the house, fling open the windows and relax on the patio outside. Long, light evenings can lull us into a false sense of security, since we can’t imagine intruders working in semi-light conditions.

In fact, summer is one of the best times for a burglar to make an appearance. While winter provides the cover of darkness, intruders simply adjust their tactics in summer time, taking advantage of our relaxed approach to home security. Don’t let them get away with it: be proactive, and use your burglar alarm to defeat them.

Entering Without Breaking

In summer, we tend to leave windows open more often, and we take advantage of patio doors at the back of the house. Many burglaries are carried out by opportunists: they see your handbag or wallet by an open door, and it’s all too easy to take it.

At this time of year, make sure your burglar alarm is set whenever your house is empty. You can set it while you’re sitting outside, so you’ll know that your house is protected.

And whenever you go out, if your alarm is set, burglars will know that you’re serious about home security. This is critical in summer, when they’ll expect you to be a bit more relaxed.

False Economy

If your burglar alarm has a fault, you might be tempted to wait until winter before calling out a technician. After all, the winter months are more dangerous and risky, aren’t they?

Not necessarily.

According to research published in the Telegraph, July 7th is the third worst day of the year for burglaries. This is partly because of the weather, and possibly because we are less careful in locking up at the end of the day.

Factor in the holiday period, too. Most families with kids will be out and about over the school summer break, often for several weeks. Even if you just head out for a weekend break, an eagle-eyed burglar could be waiting for an opportunity to pounce.

Alarm Servicing

Angel Security recommends that burglar alarms are serviced once a year. You can normally arrange servicing with us on a contract basis, so you pay for a regular appointment and you don’t need to remember to book. This is a great way to ensure your alarm is functional, and you’ll ensure it continues to act as a deterrent to theft. If upgrades are needed, we’ll carry those out at the same time.

If you have a fault with your alarm, call us out straight away and we’ll take a look at the problem.

And if you don’t have an alarm, we have a range of monitored and unmonitored solutions that will help you to secure your home all year round. Armed with our advice and the very best hardware, we’ll keep your family and possessions safe and secure.
