We’ve all gone to bed hearing thumps and bumps in the night. Strange noises leave us feeling slightly uneasy, wondering if an intruder is lurking – or already in the house. And while winter is a busy time for burglars, the summer months present new opportunities for criminals, like windows that have been left open by mistake.

Getting a good night’s sleep is all about having peace of mind that you and your family are safe. The key is to check that your home security is up to the job, before the worst happens.

Night time checks

One of the best ways to protect your home is to get into a routine.

At the same time every night, bring the bins in, take the dogs out, and start going round your home checking the security. Check that the security lights are working, and that any external gates or doors are closed and bolted. It doesn’t hurt to make sure that padlocks are intact and in good condition – and don’t forget the garage door.

Then, close and lock all doors and place your keys away from the front door. It’s a good idea to hide car keys overnight, since intruders often use their victims’ cars as getaway vehicles.

Close and lock all windows and make sure keys are nearby, but kept out of sight.

Alarms

Your burglar alarm is the final piece in the puzzle. Get into the habit of setting the alarm every night before you go to bed. Make sure family members know the code in case they need it, but don’t write it down or note it on your phone – particularly if you tend to leave your phone downstairs at night.

Often, customers tell us they aren’t using their alarm because they’re worried their pets will set it off. Some don’t realise that our alarms can be configured to be triggered only by human movement, and not by cats, dogs and other furry friends.

Extra tech

If you want more protection for your property, we highly recommend closed circuit television (CCTV). Domestic systems are becoming more and more affordable, and the latest IP cameras work with your home internet connection to relay pictures over a secure internet connection.

If you choose to have IP cameras, get them professionally installed. The infra-red bulbs in IP cameras don’t work properly through glass, so you’ll need to have them installed outside, and that means running cables to the devices. Electricity and rainwater can be a dangerous combination. Stay safe: call the professionals.

Home security is all about keeping your family safe, and making sure your property and possessions are not damaged by thieves while you sleep.
