October is National Home Security Month (NHSM), with organisations across the UK raising awareness of the importance of home security to help protect homeowners and families, as well as their property and possessions. This is the fifth year that NHSM has taken place, with supporters such as Secured By Design, Yale, Airbnb and Money Saving Expert getting behind the campaign. Here’s what you need to know about NHSM and keeping your home safe.

Home security for Surrey homes

Is your Surrey home secure?

What happens during NHSM?

This year’s NHSM is split up into five main weeks, each of which is filled with competitions, offers, incentives and advice to help homeowners around the UK improve the security of their homes. The idea is simply to spread awareness and encourage homeowners to check the security of their properties, investing in solutions if needed. The weeks are as follows:

  • Week 1: The launch of NHSM, with competitions, offers and incentives.
  • Week 2: A look into traditional home security measures, such as cylinders, padlocks and window locks, as well as the latest security standards.
  • Week 3: A discussion of smart security and the benefits of smart-home technology.
  • Week 4: Advice about securing the outside of your home and reducing hiding places for potential intruders.
  • Week 5: A week of tips for keeping your property protected over Halloween and Bonfire Night.

Key takeaways from NHSM

NHSM is still in progress, but we have already discovered some fascinating stats. For example, did you know that there is a 38 per cent spike in burglaries in the UK when the clocks go back? Or that domestic damage increases by 160% over the Halloween and Bonfire Night period? It’s true! Here are some more key home security stats provided by NHSM:

  • Sixty per cent of burglaries happen between 6pm and 6am
  • Just 30 per cent of burglaries occur during weekends
  • A staggering 25 per cent of people in the UK have not invested in home security
  • Only 30 per cent of homeowners in the UK have a burglar alarm
  • Some homeowners (16 per cent) don’t even lock the doors and windows when they leave their house!
  • An unlocked and unsecure door is the most common point of entry for intruders, with 70 per cent of burglars gaining entry through a door
  • A home that is not protected by a security system has a 300 per cent greater chance of being burgled
  • The most common places for people to store valuables are in their drawers (23 per cent) or in their wardrobe (20%).
