Prevent Intruders in Your Home
Whilst the annual number of burglaries in the UK is failing, the figures are still not as good as they could be. The current figures may not be as high as the 15 million burglaries reported in 1995, but nearly 8 million properties are still broken into and damaged every year.
It seems that property owners are slowly winning the war against unwanted intruders, but more can still be done to bring these figures down. Property owners help by taking their security responsibilities extremely seriously, and this starts at the front door. Doors still represent the quickest point of entry for any burglar to a property and making sure your front door is fully secure is the first step to deterring a would be burglar.
Here are some things you need to consider to make sure your door remains a valid deterrent.
If you have glass panels, are they truly “opaque”?
You would probably notice someone peeking in through a window, but could you say the same about someone peeking through a glass panel in your front door? If your front door has a glass panel, then you need to make sure that it’s extremely difficult for someone to look for activity inside your house. Could you work out if anyone was in by peeking through the glass panel in your front door?
Often burglars will arrive at your front door pretending to be cold callers. This gives them the chance to have a quick peek at your security. If you have a burglar alarm panel, can it be seen through the glass panel in your front door? Could you tell if it was armed, or not? If you can, then a burglar certainly can.
How secure is your letter box?
Most front doors have a letterbox. This can be a useful tool to a burglar. Letterboxes can be used by burglars to find out if you’re in or not. They will place a flyer half hanging out of your letterbox, then check back in an hour or so to see if it’s still there.
If you invest in a door without a letterbox, you will increase your security level. All you need to do is make different arrangements for your mail if you’re out when the postman calls.
Multi-lock points = more security
A multi-point lock is one of the best investments you can make when it comes to home security. The more lock points a door has, the harder it is to break down. Modern, multi-point locks have between three and seven points at which they are bolted, all controlled by one lock. If you lock your door in this way, then your front door can be almost as impregnable as a wall.
The world would be a much happier place if burglary didn’t exist. However, until that day arrives, you’ll have to be content with providing as much security as possible for your home. Making your door as strong a deterrent as possible is one of the best ways of achieving that.
