Secure your tools properly
Whether it’s your garden tools in your shed, it pays to keep tools safe. If equipment in your vehicle falls into the wrong hands, it could be used for a break-in or as part of a mini crimewave. Theft of big machinery at your business can cause huge disruption and loss.
Securing your tools and equipment properly will help prevent theft and keep your staff and neighbours safe. By taking just a few simple steps, you can drastically reduce the chance of being a victim of theft.

Vehicles at Night
Whenever possible, don’t leave your tools and equipment in any vehicle overnight. This applies to people with family cars right through to people who spend their day driving around with their tools in a van.
Tools are a magnet for thieves, since they open the door for a succession of other break-ins that wouldn’t be possible without equipment. Additionally, tools can be very valuable.
There’s also the inconvenience of having your tools taken and having to reschedule or cancel your work.
Lock Up
If it’s possible, try not to store valuable equipment in your shed. Sheds should only ever be used for items of low value that won’t pose a risk to others if taken. Providing you have the space, always try to leave tools in a locked garage instead.
If you do need to keep tools in a shed, make sure you have a good quality lock for the first line of defence. A visible lock can be a surprisingly good deterrent.
It is a good idea to obscure any windows so people can’t see what’s inside; if necessary, make sure these have a lock on too.
For extra security, use chains and padlocks to fasten large items together or secure them to a permanent fixture in your shed. This will make it more difficult for someone to walk away with your belongings.
Mark and Tag
Whether it’s a lawnmower in your shed or a combine harvester in your barn, make sure you visibly mark your belongings with your postcode and house number. This will not only act as a deterrent but will make it easier for any stolen items to be returned to you if found.
There are some other additional markers you can use such as ultraviolet markers or Smartwater. These are best used as a secondary security feature.
