Security systems for public sector buildings
Selecting security solutions for a private building is one thing, but when it comes to choosing systems for the public sector, the task is a little more complicated. As public-sector buildings, such as schools, care homes and houses in multiple occupation (HMOs), are generally responsible for the safety of multiple members of the public, site managers need to take care to ensure that security systems do not intrude on these individuals’ privacy. They also need to ensure that the systems are set up to offer maximum security to their staff, property, equipment and the individuals in their care.
What are the options?
There are three main security solutions that public-sector buildings should consider implementing: alarms, CCTV and intercoms. The exact type of technology that you choose, and where it is installed, is largely dependent on your needs as a public-sector organisation. While some buildings may be suitably protected with a single alarm and CCTV camera, larger properties may require more extensive installations, or round-the-clock monitoring services, to ensure that their students, patients or occupants are safe at all times.
Burglar alarms
Burglar alarms are hugely effective at keeping your property safe from vandals and intruders, and act as both an excellent deterrent and a quick-response solution. Available as bells-only or silent alarms (which might be a good option for care homes, as you don’t want to wake up the residents unnecessarily), they can be expertly tailored to the needs of the public sector; for example, by being fitted with a 24-hour automatic management system that immediately contacts the emergency services if an attempted break-in is detected.
Intercoms
Secure door-entry systems are ideal for public-sector buildings, as they allow members of staff to identify visitors – either via audio or video communications – before they are granted access to the property. This means that, should an unknown person try to gain entry, staff can choose not to unlock the door or security gate, and even to call the police.
CCTV systems
CCTV is another security solution that can be adapted to the needs of the public sector. Outdoor CCTV cameras can be placed at strategic locations, such as entrances, exits, carparks and ‘blind spots’. They can be fitted with infrared cameras so that they film at night, or motion sensors so that they only start filming when movement is detected. For public-sector buildings, 24-hour remote monitoring is a good option, as it saves time and resources, and ensures that all suspicious behaviour is noted. Care needs to be taken with CCTV inside the property, as you cannot intrude on the privacy of your pupils or tenants.
