Be secure if you’re working from home

If you work from home, you not only have to think about keeping your home and personal belongings secure, but you need to be comfortable that your business equipment also remains safe and secure. After all, your home office is your livelihood, and it’s all to easy to become complacent.

There are a variety of different security systems on the market, and some are very effective in protecting personal and work belongings. Consider these points before you choose one.

The Basics of Home Office Security

If you work from home, you’re probably in through the day, and this can be of some benefit when it comes to security. But you’ll still need to ensure your home security is adequate, considering the value of the goods inside.

The main access point is a good place to start. Think about the doors and windows that could potentially provide access to your house. Are they all easily lockable? Does your front door automatically lock when you close it or do you need to turn the key?

Making sure that your windows can be closed and locked will ensure that potential intruders don’t find an easy way into your home, whether you are there or not. You can also spend a small amount of money on sash jammers, an extra locking point that stops windows from being opened all the way.

If you don’t have a door that automatically locks when you close it from inside, it may be worth changing it.

Eyes and Ears

Lots of people who work from home have a converted loft or basement space, working in some of the more remote parts of the house. Depending on the type of work you do, you could be a long way from the entrance points to your house.

An intercom can be a convenient and secure way of seeing and hearing what is going on at your front door if it’s not easily accessible to you. Intercom systems can be just as beneficial in a home-run business as they are in larger organisations, keeping you in control of access and helping you avoid nuisance callers.

With an intercom, you can ensure those who are allowed entry to your premises have a right to be there. If you have CCTV cameras installed in your home, the intercom can be linked to your CCTV system to act as a deterrent for burglars and give you valuable footage of intrusion attempts.

Fire Damage

Work equipment can be expensive to replace. Security is sensible for every business, and working from home does not change that.

Fire alarms are the first defence to protecting your staff and assets from fire-related injury or damage. A good quality fire detection system should be top on your priority list when considering your security when you work from home.
